About the Role
We're hiring Forward Deployed Engineers to sit alongside our customers and build directly against their real operations. You'll spend your time with logistics operators, transport fleets and repair workshops across Australia — understanding how they actually work, then shipping the integrations, configuration and automation that get them live on the Enroute platform. This is a hybrid engineering and customer-facing role: you write production code, but you also run the discovery sessions, the go-live and the follow-up. It suits engineers who want their work to land in front of real users within days rather than quarters, who are comfortable with messy real-world data, and who lean on modern AI tooling to move fast.
Responsibilities
- •Embed with logistics operators, fleets and workshops to learn their day-to-day operations and translate them into working software
- •Build and deploy customer-specific integrations, data migrations and workflow automations on top of the Enroute platform
- •Own customer onboarding and go-live end to end — data mapping, configuration, training and post-launch support
- •Prototype rapidly in front of the customer, then harden what works into the core product
- •Diagnose and resolve production issues on customer sites, working with the core engineering team where needed
- •Feed field learnings back into the roadmap and act as the voice of the customer inside engineering
- •Write clear integration docs, runbooks and handover notes for our support and operations teams
Requirements
- •Professional software development experience (mid to senior levels considered) — you have shipped and supported software in production
- •Strong proficiency in JavaScript/TypeScript and a modern frontend framework (React or Next.js)
- •Backend development experience with PHP, Node.js or similar, including RESTful API design
- •Solid SQL and data modelling skills, and comfort writing migration or ETL scripts against messy real-world data
- •Experience integrating third-party or legacy systems (CSV feeds, webhooks, telematics, ERP or accounting APIs)
- •Exceptional written and verbal communication — you'll be the technical face of Enroute in front of operations managers and workshop owners
- •Genuinely customer-facing: comfortable running a discovery session, a training session and an incident update
- •Able to work autonomously, prioritise under pressure and switch context across several customers
- •Ability to use AI tools (Claude, ChatGPT, GitHub Copilot, etc.) to boost development efficiency
- •Willingness to travel to customer sites around Melbourne, and occasionally interstate
- •Strong problem-solving skills and a bias toward shipping
- •Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent practical experience
Nice to Have
- •Previous experience in a forward deployed, solutions or implementation engineering role
- •Background in logistics, transport, fleet or automotive services
- •Experience with mobile app development (Flutter)
- •Familiarity with GCP, Docker and Kubernetes
- •Experience with real-time systems and WebSockets
- •Understanding of DevOps and observability practices
- •Previous startup experience
Not sure you tick every box? Please apply anyway. The lists above describe the role at its fullest and very few people match all of it — if you are close, or coming from an adjacent background, we would genuinely like to hear more about you. Tell us your story and let us weigh it up together rather than ruling yourself out.
How to Apply
Put your side projects on GitHub
Make sure your GitHub profile is public and shows the work you'd like us to look at — side projects, tools you've built for yourself, experiments, open-source contributions. We'd rather read real code you chose to write than a scripted exercise.
